🏻🏻 Rightwards Thumb Sign: Light Skin Tone Emoji: Meaning & Usage
A light-skinned hand with the thumb pointing to the right, used to gesture or point sideways.
Unicode: U+1FAFA U+1F3FB
Meaning and Symbolism of 🏻
A hand pointing right, used as a casual directional or in-between gesture.
A single hand with the fingers curled and the thumb extended, pointing to the right, shown with a light skin tone. It reads most naturally as a visual nudge toward something on the right side of a message, screen, or room, and it can also carry a lukewarm "somewhere in the middle" feel when it stands in for a verdict. Since it is new, most people will take it as a direction rather than a settled piece of slang.
Popular Usage and Context
- Pointing to something on the right side of a screen
- Nudging someone toward a button, link, or next step
- Saying "this way" or "over there" in a casual chat
- Adding a visual cue to step-by-step instructions
- Joking about a lukewarm, in-between verdict

History & Origin
Approved as part of Unicode 18.0 (Emoji 18.0) in September 2026, it belongs to the hand-gesture family and was added to give users a thumb that points sideways rather than up or down.
Common Misconceptions
- That it is just a rotated thumbs-up, when the sideways angle actually changes the reading to direction or indecision.
- That a sideways thumb always means "so-so", which is a culturally specific reading rather than a universal one.
- That the light skin tone describes the sender, when it is simply a display option for the hand graphic.
Context Guide
Fine in everyday workplace chat, but it is a weak yes/no signal, so spell out direction or approval in words when it matters.
Usable in brand content, though its meaning is directional rather than promotional — best for wayfinding or "next step" cues.
Use with Caution
- Reading it as a thumbs-up approval, since the thumb points sideways rather than up
- Directions where the left/right orientation actually matters and the thumb faces the wrong way
- Formal, legal, or official documents where emoji look out of place
- Voting or rating contexts where a sideways thumb is misread as abstention or disapproval
- Referring to a real person's hand or skin tone, since tone modifiers are rendering options, not descriptions of people

Frequently Asked Questions about 🏻 Emoji
What does the rightwards thumb sign emoji mean?
It shows a hand with the thumb extended to the right, so it usually works as a directional gesture — "over there" or "that one" — and can occasionally read as a neutral, in-between answer.
Is it the same as a thumbs-up?
No. A thumbs-up points upward and signals approval, while this thumb points sideways, so it reads as direction or ambivalence rather than a clear yes.
What does the light skin tone part mean?
It is a skin tone modifier applied to the base hand emoji. It changes the coloring only, not the gesture's meaning, and the emoji also exists in other tones.
Why does it only point to the right?
The base design faces right; the left-facing counterpart is a separate emoji. If you need the opposite direction, use that one instead.
Why does it show up as an empty box on my phone?
Device and OS support varies. If your system hasn't added the emoji yet, it may appear as a placeholder box, or the tone modifier may show as a separate character.
