🏼🏼 Rightwards Thumb Sign: Medium-Light Skin Tone Emoji: Meaning & Usage
A hand with the thumb extended sideways to the right, shown in a medium-light skin tone.
Unicode: U+1FAFA U+1F3FC
Meaning and Symbolism of 🏼
A sideways thumb pointing right — direction, hand shape, or an offbeat thumbs-up.
A single hand appears with the thumb sticking straight out to the right while the fingers fold into the palm, rendered in a medium-light skin tone. Because the thumb still points up, it reads like a thumbs-up turned on its side, so people reach for it to point right, nudge someone toward what is next, or sketch out a hand-shape for fingerspelling and sign-language notes. It is brand new, so most uses are still literal rather than slang.
Popular Usage and Context
- Pointing out the next slide, link, or item in a list
- Marking a right turn or direction on a map
- Sketching a sign-language hand shape in a chat
- Giving a sideways thumbs-up of approval
- Handing a conversation off to the next person

History & Origin
Approved in September 2026 as part of Unicode 18.0, the rightwards thumb sign is one of the newest entries in the hand-gesture family, so it reached most devices well after older emoji like the thumbs-up. Its medium-light tone uses the same five-tone modifier system that has applied to people and hands since 2015.
Common Misconceptions
- That it means stop or rejection — the thumb is up, just rotated sideways
- That it is a complete sign-language word rather than a single hand shape
- That a skin-tone modifier changes what the gesture communicates
- That it is meant to point left or behind, when the thumb clearly faces right
Context Guide
In dating apps it lands as a light nudge — you're up next, or a playful swipe-right joke. It is too new and too ambiguous to carry a real romantic signal on its own.
Fine in casual team chat for directions or a quick hand-off, but keep it out of formal documents and client-facing decks.
Usable in casual brand posts, though support still varies widely, so pair it with plain text in case it renders as a blank box.
Use with Caution
- Places where readers expect the classic thumbs-up and may read a sideways thumb as a mistake
- Directions that point left, which the visual directly contradicts
- Formal documents, contracts, or client-facing decks where a hand emoji looks flippant
- Claims about real sign language, since one hand shape is not a word or a translation
- Comments about someone's race or skin color by drawing attention to the tone modifier

Frequently Asked Questions about 🏼 Emoji
What does the rightwards thumb sign emoji mean?
It usually just means right: a direction, the next item, or a hand-off to someone else. It can also work as a thumbs-up that has been rotated sideways.
Is it the same as a regular thumbs-up?
The hand shape is close, but the thumb points sideways instead of up. Most people read it as a direction cue first and an approval second.
Why does this emoji show up as an empty box on my phone?
It was approved only recently, so plenty of devices, apps, and operating systems do not have artwork for it yet. It usually fills in after an update.
Does the medium-light skin tone change the meaning?
No. Tone modifiers only adjust the hand's color to match the sender, and the gesture itself means the same thing in every tone.
Is the rightwards thumb sign an ASL sign?
Not on its own. It is a hand shape, not a full word, so it can appear in sign-language notes but does not translate to a specific sign.
