🏽🏽 Rightwards Thumb Sign: Medium Skin Tone Emoji: Meaning & Usage
A thumb extended to the right, shown with a medium skin tone.
Unicode: U+1FAFA U+1F3FD
Meaning and Symbolism of 🏽
A thumb aimed to the right, signaling look over there.
A single hand with the thumb held out horizontally and pointing right, the other fingers curled, rendered in a medium skin tone. Because the gesture is directional, it reads naturally as a visual "over there" — handy for flagging a link, a photo, or the next card in a carousel. The tone is casual and practical rather than emotional, sitting somewhere between a nudge and a quiet thumbs-up.
Popular Usage and Context
- Pointing at a link or file shared later in the chat
- Directing attention to the next slide in a carousel
- Marking a "this way" or "over here" in a caption
- Light approval while gesturing onward to the next step
- Drawing the eye to one option in a side-by-side comparison

History & Origin
Approved in September 2026 as part of Unicode 18.0 (Emoji 18.0), making it one of the newest directional hand gestures in the standard.
Common Misconceptions
- Assuming it is simply a rotated thumbs up and carries the same blanket approval
- Reading the direction as disapproval of whatever sits to the left of it
- Treating it as a hitchhiking symbol rather than a pointing gesture
Context Guide
Acceptable in casual team chats, though it feels more like an offhand gesture than a polished line for client-facing messages.
Harmless in brand copy, but since the glyph is brand new, some viewers on older devices may see a placeholder box.
Use with Caution
- Anywhere a horizontal thumb might be mistaken for an insulting hand sign in some regions
- Hitchhiking jokes that could read as an actual request for a ride
- Client-facing or formal messages where a wordless gesture looks offhand
- Sarcastic "nice work" replies that could be taken as genuine praise
- Assertions about which apps or devices already support the glyph

Frequently Asked Questions about 🏽 Emoji
What does the rightwards thumb sign emoji mean?
It depicts a thumb extended sideways to the right. In practice it works as a pointing gesture toward something nearby in a message, with a friendly, thumbs-up undertone.
Is 🏽 the same as a thumbs up?
Not quite. A regular thumbs up is about approval; this one adds direction, so it usually points at something specific rather than just saying "good."
Why does this emoji have a medium skin tone?
Hand gestures in the Unicode standard support the same five skin-tone modifiers as people emoji, so this is the medium variant of the base thumb sign.
Does 🏽 show up on my phone yet?
It was approved in September 2026 as part of Unicode 18.0, so whether it renders depends on your operating system and app updates. Older devices may show a blank box instead.
