Leftwards Thumb Sign Emoji: Meaning & Usage
A closed hand with the thumb sticking out sideways, pointing to the left.
Unicode: U+1FAF9
Meaning and Symbolism of
A thumb extended sideways pointing left, used mainly for direction rather than approval.
A closed hand with the thumb extended sideways, pointing toward the left edge of the frame. It likely reads as a directional gesture rather than a rating, so it works well for pointing at something on the left of a screen — an earlier message, a detail in a photo, an exit sign — or for playing up hitchhiking jokes and mirrored thumbs-up gags. Because it's brand new, expect blank boxes on devices that haven't updated their emoji font yet.
Popular Usage and Context
- Pointing at text or an image on the left side of a chat
- Referring back to an earlier message in a thread

History & Origin
Approved as part of Unicode 18.0 in September 2026, it extends the existing family of hand-gesture emoji with a thumb that points to the left. On-screen support depends on when a device or app updates its emoji font.
Common Misconceptions
- That it works as a thumbs-up or a sarcastic like
- That it's a thumbs-down rating
- That its official meaning is hitchhiking
- That it looks the same everywhere — older devices may show a blank box
Context Guide
It reads as a neutral pointing gesture, so it's fine in most workplaces, though some colleagues may not see it at all yet.
Acceptable for brand posts, but since the emoji is new, part of the audience may see a blank box instead.
Use with Caution
- As an approval rating — a sideways thumb isn't a thumbs-up
- As a thumbs-down to criticize someone's post
- In condolence or solemn messages where a casual gesture feels flippant
- In regions where thumb gestures can read as rude
- In campaigns aimed at older devices that may show a blank box

Frequently Asked Questions about Emoji
What does the emoji mean?
It shows a hand with the thumb extended sideways to the left, so it mainly works as a pointing or directional cue rather than a sign of approval.
Is just a flipped thumbs-up?
The hand shape is similar, but the thumb aims left instead of up, so most people would read it as a direction rather than a rating.
Why does show up as an empty box?
It was approved in Unicode 18.0 in September 2026, and devices or apps that haven't updated their emoji font may not display it yet.
Can mean disapproval?
There's no established meaning like that. A sideways thumb isn't a thumbs-down, and the gesture is normally read as pointing.
Is okay to use at work?
Yes, it comes across as a neutral pointing gesture, though colleagues on older phones may just see a blank box.
