Google's Noto 3D Emoji: A New Dimension for Familiar Faces
Google is bringing depth to its emoji artwork with Noto 3D. The redesign covers familiar characters alongside newcomers such as cracking face, lighthouse and meteor.
Designed for Tiny Messages
In its design overview, Google describes three practical priorities: recognizable silhouettes, clear expressions at small sizes, and better visibility against dark backgrounds. The team combines hand-crafted artwork with automated contrast checks.
Adding dimension also means deciding what previously hidden parts of each character look like. A drawing only needs to work from one angle; a three-dimensional character needs a coherent shape when viewed from other sides.
Open Source and Platform Rollout
Google says the library will be entirely open source. Its rollout is planned to begin on Pixel phones later in 2026, with more Google apps and partner devices to follow over time. The announcement does not mean every Android phone already has the new designs.
What Changes When You Send an Emoji?
Noto 3D changes the artwork used to display a character. Unicode's separate Emoji 18.0 update adds new characters and sequences.
An emoji you send can still look different on the recipient's device. For messages where an expression matters, a short sentence alongside the emoji helps keep your meaning clear.
